CHAPTER 13
A CLOSE CALL
Merlin relaxed in the cushioned chair in his room at the bookstore and stared out of the window while Gwen slowly rocked in her rocking chair with an open book against her chest. He thought that the investigation had started rather well. From his viewpoint, none of the interviews seemed to point to any particular individual. This didnât deter him, for he now realized that investigations, though tedious, tended to eliminate those things that didnât seem possible or definitive, leaving the more probable aspects of the crime to ponder. During his separate meeting with Felix, his mind began to speculate about a possible solution concerning the thefts. Of course, heâd need Felixâs help and heâd have to first present it to the rest of the group to get their concurrence.
âHowâd the investigation go today?â Gwen asked. âDid you make any progress?â
âSome. We mostly conducted interviews.â
âAnn and I had some lovely discussions over tea,â Gwen said. âShe seemed glad to have another female in the bookstore to talk to. However, I was careful to keep our secrets about our identities and time traveling. I felt bad about deceiving her, but there wasnât any choice.â
âYou did the right thing, Gwen. The people in this century are not prepared to accept who we truly are or how we got here.â
âI realize that the best thing we can do is to blend in,â Gwen said. âWe could never go back to the twelfth century. I wouldnât be comfortable knowing what the future was like.â
Suddenly, Merlin began to tremble with a blank stare in his eyes.
âAre you seeing another vision, Merlin?â
A few moments later, Merlin returned to normal. He shook his head several times and then rubbed his eyes.
âWhat did you see this time?â Gwen asked.
âI saw two men. They approached a hospital room. I saw a young boy in the room before they opened the door. Oh my God, it might be the boy from the circus who was shot the other evening! They must not want the boy to identify them. Theyâre going to kill him!â
âIs there anything you can do?â
âIâll try to communicate with Adam again.â With that said, Merlin went into another trance.
That same day, Adam and Edward met for an early dinner at the Upton Café on Cumberland Street. Adam picked at a Waldorf salad as he gazed out of the café window while Edward gorged himself on a Philly cheesesteak sandwich.
âWhatâs bothering you, old chap?â
âIâm just trying to put the pieces of this case together.â
âDonât worry. You will. We could have less to work with, you know.â
Adam suddenly dropped his fork on the edge of his salad bowl. A loud clatter shattered the silence.
âAdam, what is it?â
Adam didnât respond but stared into empty space.
âAdam, speak to me. Whatâs wrong?â
Adam shook his head as he came back to normal. He turned his face toward Edward. âDid you say something?â
âNo, but what happened? You gave me a scare. Are you all right?â
Adam nodded. âYes, but I had another one of those strange feelings that someone was speaking to me.
