CHAPTER 13

A CLOSE CALL

Merlin relaxed in the cushioned chair in his room at the bookstore and stared out of the window while Gwen slowly rocked in her rocking chair with an open book against her chest. He thought that the investigation had started rather well. From his viewpoint, none of the interviews seemed to point to any particular individual. This didn’t deter him, for he now realized that investigations, though tedious, tended to eliminate those things that didn’t seem possible or definitive, leaving the more probable aspects of the crime to ponder. During his separate meeting with Felix, his mind began to speculate about a possible solution concerning the thefts. Of course, he’d need Felix’s help and he’d have to first present it to the rest of the group to get their concurrence.

“How’d the investigation go today?” Gwen asked. “Did you make any progress?”

“Some. We mostly conducted interviews.”

“Ann and I had some lovely discussions over tea,” Gwen said. “She seemed glad to have another female in the bookstore to talk to. However, I was careful to keep our secrets about our identities and time traveling. I felt bad about deceiving her, but there wasn’t any choice.”

“You did the right thing, Gwen. The people in this century are not prepared to accept who we truly are or how we got here.”

“I realize that the best thing we can do is to blend in,” Gwen said. “We could never go back to the twelfth century. I wouldn’t be comfortable knowing what the future was like.”

Suddenly, Merlin began to tremble with a blank stare in his eyes.

“Are you seeing another vision, Merlin?”

A few moments later, Merlin returned to normal. He shook his head several times and then rubbed his eyes.

“What did you see this time?” Gwen asked.

“I saw two men. They approached a hospital room. I saw a young boy in the room before they opened the door. Oh my God, it might be the boy from the circus who was shot the other evening! They must not want the boy to identify them. They’re going to kill him!”

“Is there anything you can do?”

“I’ll try to communicate with Adam again.” With that said, Merlin went into another trance.

That same day, Adam and Edward met for an early dinner at the Upton Café on Cumberland Street. Adam picked at a Waldorf salad as he gazed out of the café window while Edward gorged himself on a Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

“What’s bothering you, old chap?”

“I’m just trying to put the pieces of this case together.”

“Don’t worry. You will. We could have less to work with, you know.”

Adam suddenly dropped his fork on the edge of his salad bowl. A loud clatter shattered the silence.

“Adam, what is it?”

Adam didn’t respond but stared into empty space.

“Adam, speak to me. What’s wrong?”

Adam shook his head as he came back to normal. He turned his face toward Edward. “Did you say something?”

“No, but what happened? You gave me a scare. Are you all right?”

Adam nodded. “Yes, but I had another one of those strange feelings that someone was speaking to me.
